AJ Pena recently ran the Region 19 qualifier in Texas.  He won the 3000m, and was on the winning 4X800m team. In the 1500m AJ got the silver medal and his 4x400m relay team also won silver.

You would think that making it the AAU Junior Olympic Games would be enough to keep him satisfied but AJ has other dreams. This Saturday AJ will be competing at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon during the Olympic Trials in the Track Town Youth League Championships. To make it to this meet they held qualifiers around the state. AJ’s family came up to Oregon last month and he ran in the Salem competition where he qualified in the 1500 meter run. All to fulfill AJ’s dream to run on the track that Steve Prefontaine ran on.

Plus a special treat for AJ will be to meet Prefontaine’s nephew Mike on Saturday. Mike is on the Ask a Coach panel at Youth Runner Magazine and is looking forward to meeting AJ.

Here is our interview with AJ from March if you missed it.
