A 4th grader at Colerain Elementary won two events and a gold medal at the annual AAU Junior Olympics on July 28 – August 3rd in Yipsilanti, Michigan. Azariyah Bryant won gold in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash. 



Thibodaux High School track standout Dewayne Reed will head into the new school year with his eyes on the LHSAA Class 5A State Long Jump Championship. Reed has a big, fat gold medal around his neck that serves as proof that the lofty goal is well within reach. The Tigers’ standout won the gold medal in the long jump at the AAU Junior Olympics track and field meet this summer in Michigan. His winning leap was 24-feet, 3-inches.

A local gold medalist is back at home after winning two events at the Annual Junior Olympics. Azariyah Bryant has won five gold medals in the past two years in track and field events. Azariyah says that there are no friends on the field, it's a competition. But after they're done running, the athletes always give hugs to each other and say "good job."

Koah Thompson, a fifth-grader at Lawson Elementary School and a member of the Johnston Youth Track Club, recently competed in the AAU National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships that were held July 26-August 3 in Detroit, Mich. Koah was a gold medalist in two events: the triathlon (shot put, high jump, 400 meter dash) and the high jump He broke the Iowa AAU records in both events for his age group and amassed 745 points in the triathlon and jumped 4’8″ in the high jump. Koah also finished 48th in the open 400 meter dash.

Marble Falls athlete Sarah Lewis helped her 4x400 relay team to a fifth-place finish at the AAU Junior Olympics Aug. 3. The foursome of Desiree Walker, Christy Gilbert, Lewis and Avery Ellis-Byerly ran a 4.00.75 in the finals at Detroit, Mich.

Competing in the girls 4x100 relay 17-18 years old were Daija Williams, Kendalyn Naranjo, Alyssa Leister and Eliza Metting. The girls placed 29th with a time of 53.89 seconds. 

The Haverhill Elite Track Club competed at the AAU National Junior Olympics in Ypsilanti, Mich. Thomas Darisse won the 9-year-old turbo javelin national title with a throw of 80-2 and Azariah Hooper placed sixth. Top eight were billed “All-Americans” and the club had numerous honorees.

Ten-year-old Bo Anderson from Clarkston recently finished his outdoor track season with Waza Track Club. He finished the season at the AAU Junior Olympics National Championship Track meet where he joined 18 of his teammates at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, July 27- Aug. 8.

John Curtis’ Zechariah Blake didn’t just reach one personal best at the recent AAU Track and Field Junior Olympics. Try three.The 12-year-old won the discus with a throw of 137-6, breaking the previous AAU record of 134-7 in 1998. He also placed second in the javelin (120-7) and shot put (8-3.75) in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Chino Pumas Youth Track Club athlete Ariana Gonzalez, 10, of Chino Hills won a gold medal in the high jump and bronze in the triathlon at the AAU Nationals July 24-Aug. 3 in Detroit. She won two silvers for high jump and triathlon at the USATF National Champion Junior Olympics July 22-28 in North Carolina. In Detroit, Ariana won gold in the high jump with a best leap of 4-feet, 6-inches and took third in the triathlon, which consisted of a 200-meter sprint, high jump and shot put.
