EDITOR'S NOTE: Meet Nutritionist Will Benitez. He'll be posting tips on how to fuel your performance and improve your health. He will also be live on the Youth Runner Crowdcasts in March and will be speaking at the Youth Runner Elite Middle School Camp August 6-10th.
Here we go! We're kicking off the new ongoing Nutrition Spotlight series where I'll be sharing some important highlights about various whole foods, herbs, and supplements. Follow along and learn how what is spotlighted improves your health, wellness, and your performance!
First up for the Nutrition Spotlight series is Grapefruit. Grapefruit is great source of soluble fiber, which is the reason it has been shown to lower total cholesterol. Eating enough fiber (I like to see a minimum of 25g/day but more is better!) helps keep digestion optimal, nutrient levels appropriate, the body regular, and our gut microbiome healthy.
Grapefruit is also a rich source of Vitamin C which keeps our immune system functioning well, but this vitamin is also a powerful antioxidant that everyone and especially athletes will benefit from. Red and pink grapefruit are also a great source of lycopene, another potent and one of the most studied antioxidants that keep in check oxygen free radicals that are increased from exercising, especially endurance exercising. Why is this helpful for athletes? 1) It keeps us healthy and 2) Antioxidants boost our recovery, which should be the goal for Every athlete.
So athletes, weekend warriors, and everyone else: eat your grapefruit, and when possible choose the red or pink variety as they are the highest in antioxidants! Oh, and to get the most out of grapefruit, eat as much of the stringy pith as you can.
