For the 11th-straight year, the East Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams will take part in the Pirate XC Invitational. The meet, hosted this season by the Coach Choo Track Club, will take place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25 at Lake Kristi in Grimesland. The invitational will be the Pirates’ only home event of the 2010 campaign.

East Carolina and the other collegiate teams will start off the meet Friday evening. The women run a 5K beginning at 5:30 p.m., while the men take part in an 8K starting 30 minutes later. A year ago, both Pirate teams took home the invitational titles as Dillon Hawley finished second overall for the men and Samantha Lichtner won the women’s event.

Saturday, numerous middle and high school runners from around eastern North Carolina will take their turns on the course. The open and middle school 2.5K begins at 9:30 a.m. The boys’ and girls’ high school varsity and junior varsity units all run a 5K, with the varsity girls beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the varsity boys starting 45 minutes later. Junior varsity girls run at 11:15 a.m. and the junior varsity boys complete the day with their event starting at noon. An awards ceremony recognizing the top three boys’ and girls’ squads, as well as the top 10 male and female individuals, is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

High schools who wish to compete at the Pirate XC Invitational must submit their entry by Monday, Sept. 20 at 11:30 a.m. The high school entry fee is $80.00 per team ($150.00 for both men and women) and $20.00 for each unattached individual. For the middle school race, it is $50.00 for team/club (unlimited) and $10.00 for individuals.
