The XC fans in Washington. witnessed a great 4A team race between the Gig Harbor & Eastlake girls that saw Eastlake win by a one point margin by a score of 96 to 97, which was the opposite of how the coaches poll had them. Eastlake had greater pack running to offset the brilliant race by Gig Harbor senior Alyssa Andrews of Gig. The split for the Eastlake girls was only 29 seconds, which is an impressive total. The teams are very equal in strength throughout their top six runners save Andrews, so Gig should do very well at NTN but on Saturday it was Eastlake that earned the bragging rights. Central Valley claimed third. In the individual battle Andrews, who won the South Whidby Invitational & was 2nd at Stanford, finished 20 seconds ahead of Sandra Martinez of A C Davis. Sarah Lord finished 4th ahead of Shannon Moskowitz. The Olympia girls ran without their leader Annie Dear, who has a stress fracture & had been expected to finish near the leader s.

The Mead guys on the other hand showed just how valuable the polls can be as the 6th rated (Coaches’ poll) Mead team defeated top-rated Henry Jackson 98 to 106. Fourth rated Joel Ferris scored 110 points to finish 3rd. The individual race in the boys’ division saw a battle between juniors Mack Young of Redmond & Shane Moskowitz, winner at South Whidby, of Central Kitsap with the Redmond star claiming victory by three seconds with a time of 15:18. Senior Julian Blake-Cowan of Auburn placed 3rd another six seconds back.

In the 3A competition North Central overwhelmed their competition with a 24 to 74 victory over Seattle Prep. Michael Miller of Mt. Ranier (15:36) claimed the individual title defeating Andrew Kimpel of North Central, who took 2nd. Kimpel, however, was followed by a parade of team mates who claimed the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th positions as well as 10th & 21st to leaves no doubt about the team race. Seattle Prep placed second. For the girl’s Shadle Park’s Andrea Nelson added another state title to her collection by winning with a time of 18:25 defeating Casey Parker of Seattle Prep.

Sehome won the 2A girls’ title in spite of an off day by Annie Moore, who placed only 9th. Allision Cutting of Sequim earned the title running 18:25. Sehome also took the boys’ title led by Clinton Overman but Selah’s James Currell won the individual victory with a time of 16:06.
