5A Story 5A Girls

The Oregon high school state cross country meet was once again held at Lane Community College, and it appeared to have been witnessed by the largest crowd in years. That, of course, was due in part by reasonably good conditions. Although it had rained in the morning, the rain held off for the 4A competition in the morning session and it remained dry for the afternoon races. At times, it certainly looked threatening. The day was a good one to run. It was cool with little or no breeze and the course remained firm. For sure the day was distinctly better than the last few meets which were either run in a downpour or with blustery winds.

In some ways the girls 5A race was the most compelling for there were so many interesting subplots. Alyssa O’Connor of Summit was returning for the first time since her freshman year. After two years of serious injuries and surgeries. There were a number of fans who, although they hoped she would do well, were praying first that she’d come through the day unscathed. Corvallis’ Jennifer Johnson, who was hindered by problems for most of the season, was returning after missing the last two weeks of racing and training. Though not on par with the problems of O’Connor, we all know how debilitating an injury can be and dealing with foot as well as abductor muscles can be tricky. Fortunately her doctors said that she would not get any worse by running, so she toed the line to help her team.

Kellie Foley of Crook County was making a bid to keep the state title which her sister Michelly claimed last year. For added interest, Michelly had raced well for WSU in the PAC10 meet held just the day before down the road in Springfield. Michelly was on hand too as a cheerleader for her sister. Summit also had Kellie Schueler on its roster and it’s not often that you see a dominant runner in the spring (state champion in the 100-200-400) fare well at cross country, but Kellie always makes things interesting by threading her way through the pack and showing up at the end high in the top ten. Last but not least is the story of Kayleigh Tyerman of Crater who trained hard over the summer and in doing so raised her running to a new level. She has become one of the state’s very best.

For those more interested in the team aspect of cross country, Summit was one of the top ranked teams in the northwest and sought to prove they were truly of regional caliber. Corvallis only a week ago was ranked 10th in the entire northwest before falling to their arch river Crescent Valley at the district. Then again, there was Crater which was one of the most if not the most under-rated teams in the region and was peaked for state so impressively last year.

From almost the crack of the starter’s pistol, there was no doubt that it would be a fast race. Kayleigh Tyerman held a slight lead as they ran up the first hill on the side of the track. She opened up a five meter lead over Jen Johnson and Kellie Foley who ran side-by-side. Just behind them were Alyssa O’Connor and her freshman team mate Megan Fristoe. A large pack followed only a bit behind them that included Seena Franz of Ashland, Chelsa McDonnell of Klamath and Christine Harwood of Pendleton.

Tyerman maintained her lead as she raced above the soccer field (half of the perimeter) and then head off to the back part of the course which was out of view for most fans. Racing there through the woods, Tyerman maintained a slight lead when she reached the mile mark in around 5:32 but Foley and Johnson had closed the gap and the three leaders raced along in single file. McDonnell followed about 10 meters behind and led a procession that included Frantz, Harwood, O’Connor and Fristoe. Kellie Schueler was well behind somewhere between 15th and 20th.

By the time the leaders returned to the start the race had changed its complexion for Tyerman and Foley were now alone in their battle for the lead, while Johnson ran alone 40 meters behind them. A good 30 meters behind her followed Mcdonnell, Frantz and Cristal Delgado of Hermiston who had surged into secondary contention. About 5 meters behind them were Summit’s O’Connor and Fristoe.

The next stage of the race saw them circle the old pond area, and it was there around the halfway point that the Crook County runner made her move. Interestingly enough, neither she nor her sisters would have been running if their school ran a year-round swim program, but fate had allowed them to know that they had a gift for running, as their school has no swim program even though they do swim for Redmond in the winter and Prineville in the summer. Tyerman tried to stay with her rival but could not and by the time that she had completed the orbit around the pond and headed back toward the track, Foley had opened almost a 50 meter lead. The two mile time was 11:50. Behind Foley came Tyerman and Johnson each running alone, but a number of runners led by Cristal Delgado were beginning to reel in the Corvallis star. Mcdonnell and Frantz ran in single file just ahead of O’Connor and Fristoe, who continued to work together.

Foley continued to push the pace the rest of the way and widened the gap over Tyerman, who was beginning to show the strain from the early pace. Johnson also was fatigued but doing her best to hold it together, while a horde of runners were closing in on her. Behind them Jessica Wolfe was making a big move yet it was not as big as the one by Schueler.

Foley raced away to a fine first place time of 18:32 which was most impressive, because she ran over a mile by herself. Kayleigh Tyerman came home second in a good time of 18:55 while Alyssa O’Connor closed swiftly to claim third in 18:58. Megan Fristoe was 4th in 19:04 and the amazing Schueler, who watched Olympia Andrew Wheating do much the same the day before in the PAC10 race, showed she still has the patent of threading her way through the pack took 5th in 19:07. Chelsa McDonnell of Klamath Union lead the next group of runners garnering 6th in 19:18 while Cristal Delgado of Hermiston placed 7th. Freshman Jessica Wolfe of Mountain View finished 8th edging the valiant Jen Johnson and Seena Frantz of Ashland rounded out the top ten. Brocklin Brummund of Summit earned a placement of 11th ahead of Crater’s Silver Seibert. Twin sister Sara Fristoe of Summit placed 12th to claim the last spot for the Bord er Clash. Hilary Sharpe (Summit) and Maddie Entrikin of Crescent Valley finished 14th and 15th.

The team race was somewhat anti-climatic as Summit overwhelmed their competition by

scoring (2-3-4-7-9) 25 points. The Crater girls finished 2nd but not nearly as close as anticipated

with 73 points. Pendleton, led by Sandy Torres in 21st, surprised with a 3rd place trophy with 76

points. They had a very nice pack that included placements of 29-30-31 and 34. Their spread in

times for their first five runners was only 8 seconds. The bad news was that their 2nd runner

Shoni Schimmel will be moving to Franklin next year. Also of note, if Summit had run in the

6A race, their girls would have radically changed the outcome. Jesuit would still have run and,

in fact they were so strong that their total of 36 points would be raised only two points to 38. St.

Mary’s Academy on the other hand (recall they are missing Julia Tawney) would see their total

increase, because all seven of the Summit girls would place ahead of SMA’s 4th runner raising

their total from 108 points to 122 points. Summit would have scored 76 points to finish squarely

in the middle. They will still have to run well to defeat a team like Gig Harbor but they could

very well qualify for the NTN meet.

In our preview we noted that the boys’ field was deep and the start of the race reflected that, as a throng of runners charged up the hill and then made their way above the track. Cleveland runners Brandon Kohler & Daniel Winn led the way closely followed by Jordan Ringe. Tim Costin of Springfield, who led the race early on last year, decided to try a different tactic this year & ran just a bit behind the leaders tucked away safely in fourth. In truth there was such a large pack of runners racing closely behind the leaders that it was difficult to note either their face or numbers.

They ran out of site after running above the soccer field and then headed toward the wooded area on the back part of the course. The Cleveland duo continued to lead when they reached the mile mark in 5:00. By that time the Elliott brothers from Crater, Zach & Josh, had joined the fray and Ringe & Costin remained near the front as well. Returning to the starting area the Cleveland runners maintained a slight edge over Ringe of Hermiston, who had a slight lead over Tim Costin. There still loomed a pack of 8 to 10 runners that included Ryland Karlovich of Ashland & Alex Peterson of Klamath Union.

Once again, as in the girls’ race, the route around the pond saw a major move and it was Josh Elliott, who made a bold break-away. His brother Zack followed suite & soon they had strung out the challengers, which was now down to four effectively as only Ringe & Costin had any legitimate chance at that point. Well behind them were Karlovich & Peterson, while a bit further back were Winn, Dylan Arana of Springfield & Michael Duerker of Century.

With Josh Elliott charging the hill he at first opened a small gap and, as he raced toward the soccer field he assumed a good 20meter lead. Ringe responded a bit late to the move, which allowed him to assume 2nd place. Sadly the hill proved to be the final straw for Costin, who gamely tried to stay with the leaders, but it just was not his day. In the woods Josh reached the two mile mark in 10:12. Ringe at that time was attempting to gain on the leader but that only accomplished gaining an additional edge in his battle for second place.

By the baseball diamond the leaders reappeared before the bulk of the fans and Josh Elliott was visibly straining. By the time he made the final turn towards the track his form had clearly been lost yet he was grimly striving to push as best as possible to maintain his lead. The Hermiston star reached the turn & increased his pace, even as Zach Elliott was still holding out faint hope of retaking 2nd place. Once he had reached the track it became obvious that Ringe was slowly closing in but would not have nearly enough distance to even make it close. Josh Elliott, a junior & the younger of the family, claimed victory in a time of 15:44, which was ten seconds ahead of Ringe. Zach took 3rd with 16:00 and Ryland Karlovich came on late to take 4th ahead of Alex Peterson of Klamath. Cleveland’s Daniel Winn finished 6th ahead of the tired Costin, who edged out his team mate Dylan Arana. Michael Duerker finished 9th ahead o f Jordan Monroe of West Albany & Alex Douvris of Glencoe. Mid-Willamette rivals claimed the next four spots as Ben Condrea of Crescent Valley led Anthony Earley of South Albany, Joe Martin of Silverton & Brad Nelson of Corvallis.

The team battle saw Crater claim its second straight team title - this time with 42 points to easily out-distance an impressive group from Cleveland (110). Klamath Union took 3rd with 119 points while Summit (126) & Hermiston (133) placed 4th & 5th. This year’s race was just a bit more interesting as five of last year’s top ten runners returned for another try but next year only the winner along with Daniel Winn, Dylan Arana & Jordan Monroe, only a sophomore, are underclassmen. Ben Condrea, who placed 12th will also be back.

With so many divisions for such a small state it tends to water down the various divisions & it becomes rather apparent, when there are superior runners in a so-called ‘lower’ division. Such was the case in 4A in both the boys’ & girls’ divisions. Elliott Jantzer of Phoenix took the lead early and never looked back, as he won by 21 seconds over Trevor Berrian of North Bend. Jantzer not only won the State title last year but he later finished 18th in the prestigious Footlocker National Championships & was the Western region’s second place finisher among underclassmen. Taylor Wallace is another repeat State champion, who also competed last year at Footlocker, but the Henley star qualified for the Footlocker National race. She’s been hampered by an injury suffered this summer, so yesterday was only her 2nd 5K of the season. Still her fine time of 18:43, although not as good as last year’s standard, shows that she is almost all the way back to where she was. She defeated Sutherlin’s Chelsea Spencer 43 seconds. In the girl’s team battle Siuslaw claimed the title with 36 points as they dominated their division.. Samantha Pummer & Raelyn Robinson placed 3rd & 4th to lead the team, which easily topped Scappoose which had 122 & Hidden Valley 135.. Siuslaw has their top four back next year. In the race for the guys’ divisional title third place finisher Conor Kasler led his Hidden Valley team mates to a 37 to 73 victory over Phoenix and Sisters finished 3rd with 177.

In the 3A girls’ race Nancy Cardenas of Umatilla, who placed 5th at State last year, upset defending champion Ashley Baldovino of Lakeview by twenty seconds with a winning time of 19:03. Hayley Ney of Catlin Gable claimed third place for the 2nd straight year & Sydney Snook repeated her 4th place finish from 2007. Tallisa Baldovino was 5th. Brian Nelson of Nyssa won the boys’ race with a time of 16:05 as Andrew Landstrom & Ton Sheehy finished second & third. In the team battle among the young ladies St. Mary’s claimed victory over Catlin Gable 82 to 92, while Union won the boys’ title over Nyss 49 to 67.
