The West Mesquite Stampede track and field team continued its strong summer season by claiming five gold medals at the USATF Region 12 meet in Fort Worth last weekend.
The top three finishers in each event qualify for the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships, which will take place in Omaha, Neb., on July 22-27.
The Stampede was led by Rhenique Williams, who took first place in both the 100 and 200 meters in the Youth Girls Division.
Jordan Bracy also turned in a strong performance, winning the 100 hurdles in the Youth boys division in a time of 13.73 seconds.
The other gold medal winners for the Stampede were Jordan Lewis, who won the 100 meters in the Sub-Bantam girls division, and Darion Lewis, who took first place in the 80 meter hurdles in the Midget boys division.
Deylon Jones had a strong all-around meet, taking second in the Youth boys discus and third in the shot pout to earn a pair of qualifying berths to the national meet. The Stampede was well-represented in the 200 hurdles, where Toddrick Young took second place and Bracy finished third.
Raashaan Reason placed third in the Youth boys 200 meters to round out the individual qualifiers.
The lone relay team to make the trip to nationals is the Sub-Bantam girls 400 relay, as Lewis, Helena Barrett, Candice Parramore and Spencer Clopton took third place.
The Stampede’s Youth boys 1,600 relay team of Young, Reason, Bracy and Dionn Harrison narrowly missed a top-three finish, placing fourth.
Among the other notable performances was Toddrick Young placing fifth in the 100 hurdles in the Youth boys division. Asten Lopez was sixth in the Youth girls 200 meters, while Dionn Harrison and Malcolm Bowman had the same finish in the Youth boys 100 meters and Midget boys 400 meters, respectively.
Candice Parramore was seventh in the Sub-Bantam 100 meters, while Reason took seventh in the Youth boys 100 meters. Johnny Geter took eighth place in the Midget boys 800 meters.
Finally, the Intermediate boys 1,400 relay team of Steven Martinez, LaDarius Drew, Jeremy Lewis and Deonte Lockett finished eighth.
