Frisco flinging foursome

Call them the Frisco flinging foursome.

Siblings Jasmyn, Courtney, Camille and Kevin Curry each qualified for the 2008 AAU Junior Olympics in the shot put by placing in the top four at a regional meet in Iowa on June 28. The quartet of hurlers will also compete for the Frisco Heat youth track club today and Saturday at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Region VII regional championships at Memorial Stadium.

Father Kevin Curry III said all of the children practice together and provide one another with all of the motivation they need to keep improving.

“They want to get higher places than the others at the meets,” he said. “That is one thing that has really helped.”

Jasmyn, 14, will be a freshman at Frisco in the fall. And she may be a leading Lady Raccoon from the moment she steps on campus.

She was crowned the AAU youth indoor national champion in the shot put Feb. 17 after placing first in the event at the Northern National Championship in Merryville, Ind. Jasmyn also supplied the model for her two sisters and brother. After straining her hip rather severely last season, a year after placing second at the TAAF state meet, Jasmyn wanted to pick up a field event so that she could still compete while her injury was healing. She decided on the shot put and the Curry clan followed suit.

“They just modeled her behavior,” Kevin III said. “We weren’t expecting them to do anything, but they’ve been able to do well.”

Courtney, 10, and Camille, 6, both attend Bright Elementary. Courtney, who finished seventh at the TAAF state meet last summer, competes in the sub-midget division, while Camille is in the primary division. Both Camille and Kevin IV, who is just 4 years old, are forced to compete against 8-year-olds.

“I think he’ll be the best athlete of them all,” Kevin III said of his namesake. “He is the motivational leader of the team.”

If it isn’t already, track and field will soon become a complete family affair. Both Curry and his wife are hoping to qualify in the masters division for the 2009 State Games of America. Potentially, all six members of the Curry cluster could compete at the same meet.

“That is the family aspiration we have,” Kevin III said. “We would all like to be able to win a medal as a family.”

The 2008 AAU Junior Olympics will be held July 23 to Aug. 2 in Detroit, Mich.
