In preparation for Nixa's annual Youth Triathlon, event organizers are offering several training sessions over the next month.

The sessions began at 7 p.m. June 16 at the Nixa Community Center with "How should I be training?" Bring your bike, helmet and running shoes-these sessions are hands-on learning, event coordinator David Liss said.

"If you can bike a little, swim a little and run a little, you can do this," Liss said. "It's really to promote family fitness."

New to this year's race, as well as to the training sessions, is a parents' division.

"This was the result of an overwhelming request from the parents in the post-race survey," Liss said. "The premise is to encourage families to train together and to give parents who are not familiar with the sport an opportunity to try a short distance to get a taste of triathlon and let their kids cheer them on. They are racing the same distance as the older kids. No other youth triathlon does that and we really wanted to."

Training sessions are free and open to anyone interested in Nixa's annual Youth Triathlon, though adults participating must also have a child participating.

Registration for the July 19 triathlon will be available at the training sessions, as well as online at www.ccoptimist.org/triathlon.

Registration costs $20 per athlete before July 4 and $25 per athlete after.

Registration includes a T-shirt and admission to the post-race pizza party.

The junior age division (7-10) will swim 100 yards, bike five kilometers and run one kilometer.

The senior age division (11-15 and adults) will swim 200 yards, bike 10 kilometers and run two kilometers.
