The first day of the Oregon high school track championships was highlighted by the running of the 3,000 meters for the boys & girls from the 4A to 6A levels with all events being finals. Taylor Wallace of Henley took the lead almost immediately in the 4A race. The defending champion in that event led Mikayla Bradbury of Molalla through the 400 in a time of 1:19.2 & the 800, which was reached in 2:40.0. By that point the leaders had opened up a good 20 meter gap over other potential challengers. It was a cool day and Wallace, who had qualified for the prestigious Foot Locker XC Championships last December, had hopes of taking down the state record of 9:50 for 4A & had even written down the splits that she needed on her hand prior to the race but that was not to be as her 3rd 400 was a bit off, because she had slowed a bit to an 83 second 400. Up to that point she had essentially been doing all the work but she at least had Bradbury close behind to push her but unfortunately the Molalla star fell off the pace after that point, so Wallace was on her lone from that point. Taylor reached the 1600 meter mark in 5:24.2, having run an 81 second lap, and then followed that with another in 81.9. Wallace had opened a huge lead by the time that she had crossed the finish line in 9:58.30, which would prove to be the best time of the day. Mikayla Bradbury finished alone in second and was in such fine spirits when she finished that she exclaimed to the 3rd & 4th place finishers, who were ninth graders: "Just freshmen ... That’s so cool."
The 5A race saw Michelly Foley of Crook County run in pretty much the same fashion as had Wallace. She led essentially from the start, although Kaayleigh Tyerman of Crater led briefly & then followed closely behind for some time. Over the course of the race Foley gradually increased her lead and won with a time of 10:04.97, which was faster than last year’s winning time of Hermiston’s Jennifer Macias, who was on hand to watch the race. Tyerman placed 2nd and Michelly’s sister Kellie Foley took third. Emily Olsen of Crater took 4th.
The girls’ 6A race proved to be much different than the previous ones with numerous runners remaining in contention until late in the contest. Michelle Dettman of Centennial, the current 6A XC champion, led during the early laps with the first being run in 80.1. Khalia Tidwell of Gresham ran close behind in the first few laps but the final shape of the race began to emerge prior to the 1600 when Jesuit’s Adrienne McGuirk & Sarah Bridges moved to the front. Their time at 1600 was 5:19. Piper Delaney of North Medford moved into contention around the 2K but in the end neither she nor Bridges could stay with McGuirk, who surged away over the final 300 meters to win in a time of 10:00.69. Her team mate Bridges took 2nd ahead of Piper Delaney & Michelle Dettman claimed 4th.
Elliott Jantzer of Phoenix battled Spencer Lynass of North Bend early in the boys 4A race, which was reminiscent of the duel in the XC championship last fall. During the later stages of the races Jantzer gradually pulled away to claim victory with a time of 8:40.7. Lynass placed 2nd ahead of Travis Stevens of Siuslaw.
Probably the most exciting race of the day was the one waged for the 5A:title. Jordan Ringe of Hermiston moved boldly into the lead late in the race but the final battle for the championship was between Matt Miner of Ashland & Jared Bassett of Marshfield. Miner had moved into the lead during the last lap but Bassett made a strong surge on the final turn to close the gap. By the time that they had reach the final straight he had moved to Miner’s shoulder. They raced almost side-by-side over the final 100 meters but Miner was able to edge Bassett at the end by six-tenths of a second. The race was so impressive that it was even shown on Portland’s channel 2 - enough said! Jordan Ringe placed 3rd ahead of Josh Elliott (only a sophomore) from Crater & Tim Costin of Springfield.
Brian Manning of Jesuit took the early lead in the 6A race just as he had the previous year. Peter magg, also from Jesuit, followed closely behind as they ran splits of 70 & then 2:23.3. At that point Bryce Bugess, the 6A XC champion, was back in fifth. David Marks of Lakeridge moved up to challenge after that & led, when he completed the 3rd lap in 3:34.9. He continued to lead at 1600 meters reached in 4:55 but close behind loomed Manning as well as leo Castillo of Hood River along with Burgess. Burgess claimed the lead during the next lap & had a time of 7:05 at the 2K mark. Both Burgess & Marks began their duel during the course of the next lap pulling ahead of the valiant Manning. The leaders sprinted almost together off the final turn but Marks was never able to catch Burgess, who won with a time of 8:36.83. Marks finished a second behind & Manning placed 3rd. Leo Castillo finished ahead of Peter Magg to claim 4th
Ali Super of West Linn defended her 6A title in the javelin with 149' 01".
