Compliments to Mike Johnson and his staff to run a quality meet which had water, as well as a spray of mist for the runners, immediately after their event on a very hot afternoon. How hot was it? Events of the track for a time were over-shadowed by events in the parking lot when a car in the east parking lot caught fire and exploded late in the meet. If you were looking towards the east stands you first saw a moderately dark puff of smoke. Then followed the sound that was a bit like that of the small cannons used to start a cross country race. The incongruity of that was quickly lost when suddenly a very dark cloud began to billow from that spot in the lot. It soon led to yet another car catching on fire that was unfortunate enough to have been next to it. The fire department arrived amazingly fast but for a time flame could be seen rising a good 10 to 15 feet over in the air. It was certainly not your average track meet but then the action on the track was pretty hot as well.
