Evanston track teams prep for regionals

The EHS squads travel to Casper for the West 4A Regional meet. The regional meet will be held Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, at the Natrona High School track facility adjacent to Cheney Alumni Field. Opening events will start at 9 a.m. each day.
Coach Lance Morey split his teams last weekend. Some of the EHS top performers entered the BYU High School Invitational Saturday at the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah. The rest of the Evanston teams traveled to Lander Saturday to compete in the Shane Brock Memorial Invitational.
To enter the BYU meet, competitors had to meet pre-set qualifying standards in each event.
EHS send eight athletes to Provo. The Lady Devil sophomore duo of Erin Kirby and Lauren Thomas had their usual standout performances.
Kirby and Thomas both ran career-best times in the 300-meter low hurdles. Kirby won the event with a time of 44.41 seconds. Thomas ran third with her best-ever time of 45.18.
The EHS standouts also finished high in the 100-meter intermediate hurdle event. Kirby ran third at 15.23, and Thomas was fourth at 15.29.
Angela Kaplar of Lone Peak, Utah, won the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.99 seconds.
Lady Devil distance runners Jessica Chandler and Bernadette Gutierrez had a strong performance in the 1,600-meter run. Chandler placed 39th with her time of 5 minutes, 39.70 seconds. Gutierrez was close behind, placing 44th in 5:40.24.
Skylar Ellingford also placed 20th in the shot put with a toss of 32 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
The Lady Devils tied for seventh in the team standings at the BYU meet. A total of 45 girls’ teams scored points in Saturday’s event.
In the boys’ division, Caleb Carroll continues to drop his time in the 800-meter run. Carroll finished 45th at BYU with a career-best 2:05.71.
Seth Hinckley ran a strong time in the 1,600. Hinckley placed 68th at 4:54.96.
Justin Willard also set a personal record in shot put with a mark of 40 feet, 10 3/4 inches to tie for 36th place.
EHS sprinter Michael Bryant was also qualified in several events for the BYU meet. But Evanston coaches decided to hold Bryant out of the competition in an attempt to get him healthier for regionals. Bryant has been bothered by a leg injury.
EHS results at Lander
Gabbi Smith and Stephanie Sheets each turned in strong efforts for the Lady Devils at Lander.
Smith and Sheets finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash. Smith’s time was 13.26 seconds, while Sheets was timed in 13.60.
Smith finished sixth in the 200 at 27.60, and third in the 300 hurdles at 49.59. Sheets tied for sixth in the high jump at 4 feet 10 inches, seventh in the 100 hurdles at 17.45 seconds, and seventh in the 300 hurdles at 51.52.
Katie Thomas also had a good day for EHS. Thomas finished in a tie for third in the high jump at 4-10, and sixth in the 300 hurdles at 51.34.
Leslie Richards placed in two events for the Lady Devils. Richards finished sixth in the 1,600-meter run at 6:04.34, and seventh in the 800 at 2:42.25.
Rachel Cluny also placed in two events, with a fifth-place in the pole vault at 7-6, and seventh in the long jump at 15 feet, 1 1/4 inches.
Jade Bain also placed sixth in the pole vault as she cleared 7-6.
Corey Anthos led the EHS boys with medals in both hurdle races. Anthos placed seventh in the 300 low hurdles at 44.50 seconds. Anthos also ran sixth in the 100 highs at 17.47, running behind teammate Darian Short, who was fifth at 17.32.
Sam Cornia placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:42.12. Garrick Stephenson tied for sixth in the high jump at 5-8.
EHS head coach Lance Morey said all his athletes competed well at Lander.
“Our times were pretty competitive,” Morey said. “The Lander meet was an opportunity to see all the teams in the regional except for Star Valley. It was really good, to see how our kids match up with those other teams.”
Preparing for regionals
This weekend’s West 4A Regional is the last chance for EHS athletes to qualify for state.
Individuals will earn a berth at the 4A State Meet in Casper May 15-17 by finishing in the top eight in their respective events at regionals. The top four boys’ and girls’ teams in each of three relay events at regionals will also advance to state.
Wyoming high school track and field athletes also qualify for state meet competition by exceeding pre-set standards in each event. Evanston has four state qualifiers entering regionals.
Erin Kirby is qualified in five events, including the 100-meter dash, 200, 400, plus the 100 and 300 hurdles. Lauren Thomas is qualified in both hurdle races, plus the triple jump and high jump. Stephanie Sheets is also qualified in the high jump and both hurdle events.
Michael Bryant is the lone Red Devil with a pre-qualifying mark. Bryant is qualified in both the 100 and 400.
The EHS boys and girls will compete with athletes representing Green River, Rock Springs, Star Valley, Casper Kelly Walsh and Casper Natrona at the two-day regional event.
Coach Morey plans to take most of his squad members to compete at regionals. Individuals may enter no more than four events, including relays, at the regional meet.
