The volunteers at the "Awesome 3000" made running a huge event look easy.
Over 450 parents, teachers, and high school students. Well, after 26 years they could probably write the book on how to put together a kid's running event. It all started with some parents that wanted to raise some money and support their neighborhood school. Since then they have raised and awarded over 1 million dollars to teachers to use for innovative projects in the classroom. That in itself is fantastic...well actually, awesome!

This year over 2900 kids registered to run which is the second largest in the events history. All participants get a medal at the finish line after running either a 3,000 meter or a 1,500 meter course through Bush Pasture Park.
Kindergarten kids ran a short course. The start was at one end of the track and took the runners through a mostly flat course of trails and grass then back onto the track and a finish in front of a crowd of screaming girls and parents. It seriously sounded like a 60's Beatles concert for a minute or two.

Katy McWilliams
who breezed to a win in the 5th grade girls race said that she had come back every year since Kindergarten. For the most part the races are non competitive but everyone likes a medal and there were some fierce competitions coming into the finish line.

Olympian Dave Johnson, decathlete and bronze medal winner in the 1992 games fired off the gun for each of the grade specific races for boys and girls. Seventh grade boys-seventh grade girls...you get the picture. But when the little kids were gathered up on the football field and brought over to the starting line it looked like a swarm of bees in yellow shirts. The best part about it was these kids were having fun and we saw a lot of happy faces.

Congratulations to all the kids and the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation. Dude...it was AWESOME!
