More than 2,200 kids from 38 local schools competed in the Bellin Run through the Kids for Running program in 2007. This year, Bellin expanded the program into middle schools and added a new high school program.
“To date, 41 schools have expressed interest, so we’re well on our way to another record-breaking year of participation,” said Randy Van Straten, Bellin Run Race director. “Young people add such a great dynamic to race day. They’re running the same course as some the world’s most accomplished runners, so it’s a truly unique experience for them and all involved.”
This year’s 32nd annual Bellin Run will take place Saturday, June 14, 2008. Last year’s participation of 12,908 people made it the fourth-largest timed 10K (6.2 mile) race in the nation.
Youth looking to participate in the Bellin Run can train for the event through the following programs:
· Kids for Running – Local kids in grades 3-8 are eligible to take part in Kids for Running, a program to prepare kids to run or walk the Bellin Run. Many students train as part of their after-school program activities or running programs. Faculty, staff and parents often train with the students, as well. For more information, or to sign up, contact Tia Schartner, Kids for Running coordinator, at (920) 559-0010.
· High School Challenge – Students and staff from area high schools will compete against other schools to see who can get the highest participation in the Bellin Run. High School students also have the opportunity to join the Wellness Mentorship Program – a program to assist middle and elementary schools with their Kids for Running programs – to fulfill community service hours. Contact Linda Maxwell, High School Challenge coordinator, at (920) 217-5695 for more information.
