McCormick has big day at school meet

All five of Churchill County's elementary schools competed in Thursday's track and field meet at the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Megan McCormick recorded five first-place finishes out of seven events as she won the 100-meter dash (18.24 seconds), 1600-meter run (8:53), long jump (8 feet, 5 inches), high jump (3-0) and discus throw (34-6) in the third-and-fourth grade category.

McCormick also took second in the 400-meter dash and Rebecca Mills (400, 1:29.7) and LeAnn Stands (shot put, 13-6) each won first.


Ali Tedford won the 400 (1:22.2), 1600 (7:38) and long jump (10-7), while Elaina Mauga claimed first in shot put (18-4.5) and discus (42-6) in the fifth-and-sixth grade category.

Malory Goodrick won the high jump (3-10) and took second in shot put and the 400. Melissa Cossette took second in long jump and third in high jump.

On the boys' side, Cameron Matzen won three events, Aaron Bitter took two, and Evan Bitter had one in the third-and-fourth grade category. Matzen won the 100 (15.36), high jump (3-6) and discus (40-7), and Aaron Bitter won the 400 (1:19) and 1600 (6:37). Evan Bitter won in long jump at 10-7.


Kevin Rutledge won six-of-seven events, and Bradlee Stands won in high jump at 4-0 in the fifth-and-sixth grade category. Rutledge was victorious in the 100 (12:74), 400 (1:02.8), 1600 (7:14), long jump (13-2), shot put (22-10.5) and discus (62-7). Spencer Robertson had three second-place finishes in high jump, shot put and discus.

In the 4x100-meter relay, the fifth-and-sixth grade team of Kaleb Orong, Mike Goodrick, Robertson and Stands won in 1:06.6. The team of Charles Fulks, Brycin and Kenneth Freeland and Anthony Woller took second, followed by Garrett Kalt, Lane Boyle, Dylan Jones and Nathan Heck.

The team of Tyler Moye, Evan and Aaron Bitter and Matzen won the younger division's relay in 1:08.8. Sean and Taylor Cordes, Sean McCormick and Rian Greenwall took second followed by Kaleb Pearce, Mike Richards, Cody Morris and Kayden Orong.


For the girls, the team of Sydney Howard, Mills, Cossette and Goodrick took first in 1:11.6 in the older division. Tiffany Lewis, Destiny Allsop, Evan Matheson and Tedford came in second followed by Megan Yost, Anna Lynch, Gabby Silva and Mauga.

The team of McKenzie Feest, Ashley Lewis, Alyeyah Boothe and Stands won in 1:23.9, followed by Ally Steele, Cimmantha White, Stacey Kalt and Josh Husband. Muriel Hepworth, Bristee McKnight, Mills and McCormick took third.

Some of the teams had high school athletes and coaches running to fill in empty holes.
