Wesh, Copeland lead strong local showing at

national meets

The indoor track season officially came to an end this weekend with some great performances by many South Hampton Road athletes.
 
Three came home with three national titles and more than a dozen other athletes and relay teams  earned All-American status by placing in the top six.

Leading the way was Landstown junior Marlena Wesh. She won the 200 meters and ran a leg on the winning 800 relay and a leg on the runnerup 1,600 relay at the Nike Indoor National meet in Maryland.
 
Wesh won her race with a time of 24.46.
 
She teamed with Olivia Hutchins, Kelnesha Hinnant and Cierra McGee to take first in the 800 relay in a time of 1:40.08.
 
Wesh, Hinnant, McGee and Taylor Wheaton combined to finish second in the 1,600 relay.
 
Lakeland senior Chris Copeland also won a national title. Copeland cleared 6-9 ½ on Friday to win the high jump at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York City. Two days later he jumped 6-10 ¼ to take third at the Nike Indoor National meet.
 
Other athletes who earned All-American honors at the Nike meet include:
 
--      Booker T. Washington’s DeShana Briggs, second in high jump (5-7 ¼).
--     Nansemond River’s James Taylor second in long jump (23-6 ¼).
--      Grassfield’s Curtis Campbell third in 200 (22.12).
--      Western Branch’s Ermesha Fair third in triple jump (39-0 ¼).
--      Green Run’s Charisse Bryant fourth in 60 hurdles (8.70).
--      Western Branch’s Kevin Newsome fourth in 60 hurdles (7.97).
--     Oscar Smith’s Wesley Smith fourth in long jump (22-11).
--     Great Bridge’s Taylor Sykes fourth in 400 (49.36).
--      Norfolk Collegiate’s Nefertiti Smith fourth in triple jump (38-8 ¼) and sixth in long jump (17-11 ½).
--      Western Branch’s Tory Womack sixth in 60 meters (6.88).
 
Several relay teams also did well.
 
In the boys 800 relay, Nansemond River was third (1:30.03), Green Run fifth (1:30.54) and Western Branch sixth (1:30.85).
 
Western Branch was fifth in the boys shuttle hurdle relay, and Booker T. Washington was third in the girls 1,600 relay.
